Monaghan
The town itself was built near a crannog, which would have been built in early Christial times. A garrison was established in the town at the time of the partition of Monaghan, which arose form the executive of Hugh Roe McMahon in 1590.
The present town has its beginnings in 1613 during the plantation of James I. Monaghan became a thriving centre for the lined industry. It was also a centre for lace making. The town was populated mainly by Scottish Calvinists. Around the time it was built around three squares: the Market Square - the older buildings of which date back to the 18th century; Church Square; and the Diamond which was the original market place.
