Ennis
Ennis dates back to 1240, when Donncha O'Brien, King of Thomond, helped establish the Franciscan Abbey. Today, the abbey is one of the most famous and beautiful national monuments in the region. A statue of the 19th century patriot Daniel O'Connell (1775-1847) towers over the high street. Across the river is the old Presbyterian Church, now a De Valera museum. Eamonn De Valera was a leader of the Irish Free State and president of the Republic of Ireland. A bronze statue of him stands in the town park. The neo-classical courthouse in the
town is much admired.
